Chapter 10
Mark 9:2-13

“The Law and the Prophets Testify”

A week after Jesus taught the suffering of the Son of Man and the cost of discipleship, he is transfigured before Peter, James, and John. At the transfiguration, this intimate group from amongst the disciples get to experience a glimpse of the glory of God and witness the truth of the Scriptures finding their fulfillment in Christ Jesus. Mark 9:14-29

“‘If’s’ Right Place”

In desperation for his demon-possessed son and at the apparent lack of power from the Disciples, a father mistakens Jesus’ authority, prompting our Lord to teach “if’s” right place in relation to faith. (October 18, 2020)
Mark 9:30-37

“Jesus Defines Greatness”

While teaching about His necessary death, Jesus takes the time to define what true greatness is. This message is brought by Dr. Jarrett Knight, associate director of Cogito, a Christian studies consortium located at Hampden-Sydney College. (October 25, 2020)
Mark 9:38-41

“In the Name of Jesus”

Jesus provides his definition of greatness, which strikes at John’s conscience and moves him to confess the disciples’ earlier rebuke of a man performing miracles in Jesus’ name but was not part of their party. In this message, I explore the implications of Jesus’ response to John’s confession. (November 8, 2020)
Mark 9:42-50

“Sin and Salt”

After defining greatness and correction John’s error, Jesus further expands on His teaching on servant leadership. In this message I unpack Jesus’ teaching of the weight on the shoulders of teachers in the church, the importance of addressing that which causes stumbling, and the need to be seasoned by the Gospel.
