Jesus summarized the law in two parts, loving God with our whole selves and loving our neighbors as we love ourselves. To better understand Jesus’ summary, we need to have a proper understanding of the moral law as set forth in the Ten Commandments.

Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.

The First Commandment establishes the holiness of God.
Deuteronomy 5:1-21

Thou shalt not make thee any graven image.

The Second Commandment establishes the right worship of God.
Deuteronomy 5:1-21

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain.

The Third Commandment establishes our reverence due to God.
Deuteronomy 5:1-21

Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it.

The Fourth Commandment establishes our thanksgiving due to God.
Deuteronomy 5:1-21

Honour thy father and thy mother.

The Fifth Commandment establishes our respect to authority.
Deuteronomy 5:1-21

Thou shalt not kill.

The Sixth Commandment establishes the sanctity of human life.
Deuteronomy 5:1-21

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

The Seventh Commandment establishes the sanctity of commitment.
Deuteronomy 5:1-21

Thou shalt not steal.

The Eighth Commandment establishes the sanctity of ownership.
Deuteronomy 5:1-21

Thou shalt not bear false witness.

The Ninth Commandment establishes the sanctity of the truth.
Deuteronomy 5:1-21

Thou shalt not covet.

The Tenth Commandment establishes the sanctity of contentment.
Deuteronomy 5:1-21
