Everything changes when we come to the third chapter of the Book of Genesis. We’re introduced to a new character, a serpent, the craftiest of God’s creations. We witness first hand the shrewdness of this deceiver when he lies to Eve and twists God’s words in order to tempt her and her husband away from obedience to God’s single and simple command. Of course, the ramifications are much greater than merely not following the rules. Their actions (and inactions) reveal the struggle we have today: who has more sway in life, God or self? This autonomy is both the greatest deception and greatest destroyer of God’s people. Thanks be to God even in the midst of this tragedy, there is a glimmer of hope, a tiny seed of grace planted with the Gospel in embryonic form.

About the seriesThe Book of Genesis is the starting point of God’s covenant with His people. This book gives us the historical sketch of the creation, fall, and redemption of the world. Genesis is also a perfect litmus test to gauge whether or not a person fully trusts in the authority, sufficiency, and inerrancy of Scripture. Categories
